Electrical Symbols Key

Welcome to the Electrical Symbols Key page. Below are a number of tables outlining all of the equipment symbols that you will come across on our site. The tables feature the component symbol, the name of the component, and a short definition. Each has b een categorised accordingly for easier browsing. Please note that some of the symbols have multiple variations, therefore slight differences may be present.

Electrical Symbols Key - SOCKETS
Symbol Name Definition
Single Socket Single Socket Receptacle providing a place in a wiring system where current can be taken to run electrical devices (single).
Single Socket Double Socket Receptacle providing a place in a wiring system where current can be taken to run electrical devices (double).
Single Socket USB Outlet A power adapter that generates the 5 volt DC standard required by USB. The charger plugs into an AC outlet.
Single Socket Shaver Socket A socket often in a bathroom, that is used to connect an electric shaver to a supply of electricity.

Electrical Symbols Key - SWITCHES
Symbol Name Definition
Single Socket 1 Gang Switch One switch in as many circuits operated simultaneously by a single control.
Single Socket 2 Gang Switch A set of two switches in as many circuits operated simultaneously by a single control.
Single Socket 3 Gang Switch A set of three switches in as many circuits operated simultaneously by a single control.
Single Socket 4 Gang Switch A set of four switches in as many circuits operated simultaneously by a single control.
Single Socket Special Order A customised switch featuring one or more bespoke features, outlined by the customer (USB, Network etc.).
Single Socket Dimmer A switch for temporarily reducing the brightness of the lights of a vehicle.
Single Socket Standard Switch A small device, usually pushed up or down, that controls and turns on or off an electric current.
Single Socket Toggle Switch An electric switch operated by means of a projecting lever that is moved up and down.
Single Socket Push Button Switch A simple switch mechanism for controlling some aspect of a machine or a process. Usually plastic or metal.
Single Socket Cooker Switch A simple switch mechanism for controlling a standard household cooker process. Usually plastic.
Single Socket Key Switch A switch that can be activated only by the use of a key. Used in situations where access needs to be restricted.

Symbol Name Definition
Single Socket Pendant Lighting A lone light fixture that hangs from the ceiling usually suspended by a cord, chain, or metal rod.
Single Socket Chandelier A decorative ceiling-mounted light fixture, a distinct type of pendant light. Often incandescent light bulbs or LED.
Single Socket Batten Holder A device for securing a lamp to its support, a socket or holder fitted with electric terminals.
Single Socket Surface Fitting A standard type of fitting used to secure a light to an appropriate surface.
Single Socket Down Light with Tungsten A small spotlight set in a ceiling and directed downward - contains a special type of light for enhanced brightness.
Single Socket Tiltable Down Light A small spotlight set in a ceiling and directed downward, with the ability of tilt and movement.
Single Socket Shower Proof Down Light A small spotlight with waterproof attributes, set in a ceiling and directed downward.

Symbol Name Definition
Single Socket Wireless Lighting A wireless device that commands a light to turn itself off or on, instead of interrupting the power line going to the light fixture.
Single Socket Wired Lighting The conventional method of producing light - equipment in a room, building, or street for producing light.
Single Socket Smart Lighting A lighting technology designed for smartphone connectivity. Mobile applications provide the ability to toggle lights.

Symbol Name Definition
Single Socket Ceiling Mounted Fan A mechanical fan, usually electrically powered, suspended form the ceiling of a room. Uses hub-mounted paddles.
Single Socket Wall Mounted Fan A type of fan that is recessed into the wall or ceiling. Available in various sizes and designs.
Single Socket In-Line Fan A fan that is mounted (inside or connected to ducting) that is used for extraction purposes. Typically located inside roof-space.
Single Socket Fan Isolation Switch A switch usually used with an extractor fan to enable isolation of the fan for repair and maintenance - fitted outside the room.
